This little girl was one of the participants in the Cherry Blossom Parade in Japantown San Francisco, 1999.
There were some great kids at the parade, including this group of Cub Scouts.
These are some Taiko Drummers at the Cherry Blossom Parade in Japantown San Francisco, 1999.
This is one of San Francisco's finest at the Cherry Blossom parade, 1999. Another officer allowed me to go inside the barricades to get better photos of the drummers and dancers along the parade route; it was a good day.
This float was powered by men and women instead of the standard hidden car. It seemed alive as it surged down the parade route. A laboring mass of handlers carrying the float heaved, and it rose, fell, swaying first one way then the other as they chanted gutturally in unison. Two men clung to the top of the float as it swayed down the street blowing whistles and yelling to urge the bearers on.
This dude stripped down to his loin-cloth and climbed up on top of this drum during the parade and rode it to the end. It was dramatic to say the least, and the crowd loved it.
Here's a picture that shows the drum dude from a distance so you can see how he's riding this giant drum on a float like a surfboard down the parade route; what a ride!
This exhibit is not finished yet, thank you for your patience.
